Dawa Liangzi: Completing My 7-Peak Journey
My quest to conquer 7 peaks in 25 days concludes with Dawa Liangzi. Witness the culmination of my mountain-climbing odyssey.

Introduction to Dawa Liangzi and the Challenge Ahead
Dawa Liangzi stands as the final expedition for my Seven Peaks challenge in Sichuan province. This imposing summit, located at the junction of Meiwo Township, Hanniu Township and Pan'an Township in Xiaojin County, epitomises the rugged beauty and untamed nature of the region. Despite the allure that other peaks in the challenge may hold, it is Dawa Liangzi's undeveloped and non-commercialised landscape that adds a significant layer of difficulty, testing even the most seasoned mountaineers.
What sets Dawa Liangzi apart is the mystery that shrouds its trails and the sparse information available about its climbing routes. Unlike other peaks within the challenge that may offer well-trodden paths, Dawa Liangzi requires climbers to navigate a less defined, more treacherous terrain. This aspect enhances the thrill and apprehension surrounding the ascent, pushing climbers beyond their comfort zones and demanding a higher level of preparation and adaptability.

Adding to the allure is the element of the unknown, as each step taken on this mountain can lead to new discoveries and unforeseen obstacles. Guided by a local mountaineering club, I am afforded the expertise necessary to tackle this untried ascent. The local guides, with their intimate knowledge of the area and its climatic nuances, become invaluable allies in this expedition. Their presence underscores the importance of local wisdom in navigating the unpredictable challenges posed by Dawa Liangzi.
In essence, the climb to Dawa Liangzi is more than just a physical conquest; it is a symbolic journey, etching an indelible mark on those who dare to undertake it. This mountain not only tests one's climbing prowess but also embodies the essence of adventure, resilience, and the sheer spirit of exploration that defines my Seven Peaks challenge.

Preparations and Team Dynamics
Climbing Dawa Liangzi, my final summit in the formidable Seven in Sichuan, demanded meticulous planning and unparalleled teamwork. The extensive preparations began well before the actual ascent, encompassing detailed strategies, assembling top-tier gear, and fostering robust team dynamics. Given the peak's remote and uncharted nature, each move required precise coordination and unparalleled readiness.
The gear assembled for this expedition was nothing short of comprehensive. High-altitude climbing necessitates specialised equipment to combat extreme conditions. The team acquired advanced thermal clothing, state-of-the-art climbing harnesses, carabiners, and sturdy ice axes designed specifically for this terrain. The emphasis was on ensuring every piece of equipment was tailored to handle the rigors of Dawa Liangzi's unpredictable environment.
The local mountaineering club played a pivotal role in preparing the team for the ascent. Although they had limited experience with Dawa Liangzi itself, their extensive knowledge of the Sichuan region's general mountaineering challenges was invaluable.
The anticipation of tackling Dawa Liangzi was palpable throughout the preparation phase. Strategic planning sessions were held to assess and reassess the plans, ensuring all contingencies were covered. Each member's readiness, both physically and mentally, was constantly evaluated. This holistic approach towards preparation ultimately instilled a sense of confidence and unity within the team, setting the stage for an expedition poised to conquer the elusive Dawa Liangzi.

Day 1: Journey from Chengdu to Siguniang Town
The expedition to Dawa Liangzi commenced in the bustling city of Chengdu, a gateway to the vast mountainous regions of Sichuan. As the team gathered at the departure point, a palpable sense of excitement filled the air. The logistics of this initial phase were meticulously planned; a private coach was arranged to transport the team and their equipment, ensuring a comfortable yet efficient journey.
The drive to Siguniang Town, nestled approximately 220 kilometers west of Chengdu, offered the team an opportunity to acclimatise gradually to the increasing altitude. Along the route, the dramatic shift from the urban landscape of Chengdu to the rugged terrains and pristine vistas of the Western Sichuan Plateau was a sight to behold. This picturesque drive was punctuated with intermittent stops for refreshments, allowing the team to relish the scenic beauty and breathe in the crisp mountain air.
Siguniang Town, often referred to as the 'Four Girls Mountain Town,' is a renowned base for adventures into the Qionglai Mountains, which include the peaks of Siguniangshan and Dawa Liangzi. The town emanates an aura of tranquility and is enveloped by towering peaks and lush greenery. This idyllic setting not only serves as an excellent launch pad for mountaineers but also offers a glimpse into the local culture and customs, enriching the entire experience.

Upon arrival in Siguniang Town, I checked into a cozy lodge for the night and a sumptuous dinner prepared for the team. The evening was dedicated to final preparations and briefings, with team members sharing personal stories and aspirations for the climb ahead. There was a unanimous understanding of the challenges that awaited them in climbing Dawa Liangzi, the awe-inspiring and lesser-scaled peak among the renowned mountains in the region. The team's mindset was one of determination and camaraderie, fortified by a communal goal to summit a peak that few have ventured.
Thus, the first leg of the journey set a strong foundation, with Siguniang Town providing not only a logistical base but also an inspirational backdrop that captured the essence of high-altitude mountaineering adventures in Sichuan.

Day 2: Drive to Xiaojin County and Reconnaissance
Embarking early on the second day, the team set out from their lodging towards Xiaojin County, a pivotal location en route to Dawa Liangzi. The drive itself was an immersion into the rich, scenic landscapes of Sichuan, featuring sprawling valleys, dense forests, and glimpses of snow-capped peaks. This journey was more than just a precursor to the climb; it was an opportunity for the team to acclimatise to the increasing altitude and soak in the breathtaking beauty that this region offers.
Upon reaching Xiaojin County, the team was met with the warm hospitality of the local community. It was here we gathered essential last-minute supplies and finalised our logistical plans. From the county, a shorter trek led us to the designated camping site, strategically chosen for its proximity to Dawa Liangzi. The site was nestled in a relatively flat area, providing a safe and stable base for setting up their tents and equipment.
Camp setup was meticulous, ensuring that each team member's tent was secure and comfortable for the night ahead. This camp served as our pre-ascent headquarters, where we would finalise our gear, discuss strategy, and mentally prepare for the challenging climb looming before them. The team conducted a comprehensive review of their climbing equipment, ensuring that everything from ropes to harnesses was in optimal condition.

A crucial activity of the day involved the lead guide's reconnaissance of Dawa Liangzi. The guide, equipped with years of experience and local knowledge, scouted the mountain to ascertain the safest and most efficient climbing route. This preliminary exploration aimed to identify potential hazards, gauge terrain conditions, and map out key waypoints for the ascent. The guide’s findings were then communicated to the team, helping to refine their climbing plan and boost their confidence.
As dusk settled, the team gathered for a modest yet nourishing meal, discussing the day's achievements and the challenges that lay ahead. The drive to Xiaojin County and the meticulous camp setup marked a significant step in the journey to climb Dawa Liangzi, setting a tone of preparedness and camaraderie for the arduous trek that awaited them.

Day 3: The Ascent of Dawa Liangzi
Day three commenced with the excitement and anticipation of summiting Dawa Liangzi. The team set out at 8am sharp, fueled by determination and the tranquil yet daunting beauty of the peak ahead. The initial phase of the ascent involved navigating a well-trodden path that meandered through dense forests and rocky terrains. This phase, though relatively moderate, set the stage for the physical and mental fortitude required for what lay ahead.

As the team progressed, the path became increasingly steep and treacherous. The true test began at the base of the cliff face, a near-vertical rise that required a blend of technical climbing skills and sheer willpower. Armed with climbing ropes, carabiners, and harnesses, each member employed their unique strengths to navigate the jagged rocks and precarious ledges. Despite the strain on muscles and the thin, oxygen-deprived air, the group pressed on, driven by collective resilience and mutual encouragement.

Challenges emerged in the form of loose rocks and sudden gusts of wind, which posed significant threats to the climbers' balance and stability. Yet, through a combination of precise teamwork and unwavering resolve, these obstacles were overcome. Whenever doubt crept in, the sight of fellow teammates, equally dedicated and relentless, provided the moral support needed to push forward. The camaraderie amongst the team members proved to be an invaluable asset, bolstering spirits during the most strenuous segments of the climb.

After hours of arduous climbing, the sight of the summit brought a renewed wave of energy. At 4800 meters, the peak was finally within reach. Upon reaching the top, a profound sense of accomplishment enveloped the team. As a symbol of this triumph, we constructed a marnyi stone—an age-old Tibetan tradition—marking our first successful ascent of Dawa Liangzi. This act not only signified our personal victory but also paid homage to the enduring spirit required to conquer such formidable heights.

Reflections and Satisfactions Post-Climb
The ascent of Dawa Liangzi, while marginally lower in altitude compared to the other peaks I had climbs during my expedition, marked a significant milestone in my mountaineering journey. This climb was not merely about reaching a summit; it represented the culmination of determination, teamwork, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Each member of the team brought their unique strengths to the expedition, and it was these combined efforts that led to the ultimate success.
Mountaineering is often perceived as a solitary endeavor, yet the true essence of climbing lies in the camaraderie and mutual support among team members. Dawa Liangzi reinforced this belief, as the challenges faced during the climb tested my endurance and resilience. The satisfaction derived from overcoming these obstacles was immense and collective. For many of us, the climb of Dawa Liangzi has etched new, indelible memories and lessons in perseverance and trust.

Significantly, this expedition has also augmented our respect for the underexplored, uncommercialised mountains. Peaks like Dawa Liangzi represent the untouched, raw beauty of nature, offering a purer, less trodden path for adventurers. As the commercialisation of famous climbs continues, many mountaineers are turning towards such peaks for an authentic and unspoiled experience. Dawa Liangzi, in this respect, has illuminated the immense potential and promise these mountains hold.
Looking ahead, the climb of Dawa Liangzi has opened up new horizons for me. I have cultivated a deeper appreciation for the lesser-known summits, which present unforeseen challenges and unparalleled rewards. The experience has also inspired me to continue exploring and conquering such unique and pristine landscapes. As I plan future expeditions, my reflections on Dawa Liangzi will serve as a beacon, reminding me of the sheer joy and fulfillment that comes from venturing into the relatively unknown.
