After a long and arduous trip through Yunnan and Chengdu, I finally returned to Singapore on the 17th of May, 2024. The mountaineering bug bit me hard, and I spent the next month working on my AN Adventure site, all the while daydreaming about scaling more peaks in China. But before diving into another expedition, I decided to take a short break with my kids and my youngest sister, Jo, to Bali for some much-needed relaxation during the kids' holiday. Here's a tale of our time in Ubud from June 3rd to June 8th, 2024.

Day 1: Arrival and Homestay Delight

We opted for a homestay with a local Balinese family to give everyone an authentic cultural experience. Touching down in the afternoon, we battled through heavy traffic and exhausted kids to finally arrive at our charming homestay in the evening. The facilities at our homestay were nothing short of delightful. We were particularly impressed by the serene outdoor surrounded by tropical foliage, a perfect spot to unwind after our journey. Each room was equipped with simple amenities, ensuring a comfortable stay while still giving us a taste of Balinese life. The hosts’ attention to detail was evident in the thoughtful touches throughout the property, from the fragrant frangipani flowers left on our pillows to the complimentary welcome drinks served upon arrival.

Our homestay wasn't just comfortable—it was a window into the everyday lives of the warm and welcoming Balinese people. The local family radiated happiness and camaraderie, with laughter filling the air and returning guests greeted like long-lost friends. Each morning, we were greeted with a scrumptious breakfast that seemed to magically appear as soon as we stepped out of our rooms. The beautiful garden surrounding the grounds was perfect for sipping tea on the porch and taking in the peaceful view. Our host arranged all our activities, ensuring we got the best value and services. It was more than just a place to stay; it was a heartfelt and authentic Balinese experience that left us with cherished memories.

Our initial day ended with the setting sun casting a golden hue over the verdant landscape, as we eagerly anticipated the adventures to come. The warmth and hospitality of our homestay had set a perfect tone for our Bali break, and we couldn't wait to explore more of this island paradise with our family.

Day 2: Trekking Mount Batur

Our second day in Bali began long before dawn, astonishingly early at 2 AM. The sky was blanketed in a thick canopy of stars as we prepared ourselves for the trek up Mount Batur. Known as one of Bali's most revered and active volcanoes, Mount Batur offers not just an exhilarating climb but also a deep immersion into Balinese culture. Standby layers of warm clothing and armed with flashlights, our group gathered at the trailhead, fueled with anticipation.

The trek commenced under the cover of darkness, guided by experienced local guides who narrated stories and local lore about Mount Batur. The initial phase of the climb was relatively easy, allowing us to acclimate to the terrain. However, as we ascended, the route became steeper, and the volcanic ash and rocks proved to be challenging. Each step became a conscious effort, requiring balance and tenacity.

Despite the physical demands, the experience of trekking Mount Batur before sunrise was profoundly rewarding. Every so often, we would pause to catch our breath and sip some hot tea from our thermos, all while gazing at the stars that seemed to envelop us. As we approached the summit, a faint glow began to creep into the sky, signaling the imminent arrival of dawn.

The summit of Mount Batur was a spectacle to behold. Standing at 1,717 meters above sea level, we were supposed to be treated with a panoramic view that was nothing short of mesmerizing. Unfortunately, the sunrise was hidden by mist, but we still managed to capture some cloudy morning views. Nonetheless the sense of accomplishment from conquering the climb made the entire journey worthwhile.

Trekking Mount Batur offered a deeper appreciation for Balinese culture. The mountain itself is a sacred site, often associated with local deities and spiritual significance. For future trekkers, it's important to respect these cultural elements and to be well-prepared with proper footwear, clothing, and supplies. Additionally, engaging a knowledgeable guide can enhance the trekking experience, providing both safety and enriching insights.

Day 3.1: Cooking Lessons

Our third day in Bali started with an immersive and educational experience through a hands-on Balinese cooking class. Only Ethlyn and myself attended the cooking school, eager to explore the rich tapestry of Balinese culinary traditions. The class began with a brief introduction to the essential spices and ingredients that form the backbone of Balinese cuisine. Our instructor, a seasoned local chef, guided us through the use of fresh herbs like lemongrass, turmeric, and kaffir lime leaves, which provided vibrant flavors and aromas to our dishes.

Under the chef’s guidance, we prepared several classic Balinese recipes, including Chicken Soup, Sate Lilit (minced fish satay), and Sambal Matah (raw sambal). The process was enlightening, and each step was meticulously explained, ensuring that we understood the significance of each ingredient and technique. The hands-on nature of the class allowed everyone, regardless of cooking skills, to participate actively. By the end of the session, we had not only prepared a delightful Balinese meal but also gained a deeper appreciation for the culture and dedication that goes into local cuisine.

Day 3.2: River Rafting

Jo and Aleris instead went for the river rafting adventure. Their morning brought a contrasting thrill as they ventured to the Ayung River for an exhilarating river rafting experience. The Ayung River, famed for its breathtaking scenery and lush surroundings, offered the perfect backdrop for our adventure. After a comprehensive safety briefing and donning their rafting gear, they embarked on the white-water journey. The guide ensured all participants were well-versed in safety measures, including paddling techniques and the importance of teamwork.

Day 4: Cycling Through Villages and Rice Fields

Day four of our Bali family adventure was dedicated to exploring the serene and picturesque villages and rice fields by bicycle. This scenic cycling tour provided an immersive experience, allowing us to truly connect with Bali's rural landscape. Pedaling through verdant rice paddies and quaint village paths, we found ourselves enveloped in a tapestry of nature’s brilliance and traditional Balinese culture.

One of the tour's highlights was the chance to interact with the local villagers. Warm and welcoming, they offered us a glimpse into their daily lives. We interacted with children playing in front of their homes, artisans crafting traditional goods, and farmers tending to their rice fields with an expertise handed down through generations. These interactions provided a deeper understanding of Balinese society, where community and familial bonds play an integral role.

The stunning landscapes were another unforgettable aspect of our cycling journey. As we navigated the winding paths, the sight of the terraced rice fields stretching out as far as the eye could see was a testament to the island’s agricultural prowess. The emerald green of the fields contrasted beautifully against the backdrop of Bali’s volcanoes, creating a mesmerizing panorama that will forever be etched in our memories.

Additionally, the tour included insightful explanations about traditional Balinese farming practices. We learned about the subak system, an ancient irrigation method that harmonizes water distribution among the rice terraces. Understanding these sustainable agricultural techniques gave us a newfound appreciation for the delicate balance maintained between humans and nature in Bali.

Moreover, participating in such initiatives underscores the importance of sustainable tourism. By engaging with and supporting local communities, tourists can help preserve Bali's cultural heritage and contribute to its economic stability. Our cycling tour through the villages and rice fields was not only a journey through Bali's beautiful landscapes but also an enriching cultural experience. It reinforced the significance of responsible tourism practices in safeguarding the island's traditions and environment for future generations.

On our last day before returning to Singapore, I had a wild idea: why not get a tattoo in Bali? I researched Bali's famous tattoo scene and, leveraging my limited knowledge of AI design, crafted an original tattoo resembling a mountain—a nod to my newfound passion for mountaineering. I had it inked on my right ankle, right at the ball joint, giving it a 3D effect from a distance. I was thrilled with the tattooist's work and dedication.

Day 6: Farewell Bali

As the sun rose on our final day, the gentle rustle of palm leaves and the distant sounds of roosters signaled the beginning of our farewell to Ubud Bali. This island, with its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, had carved a unique space in our hearts over the past week. Our journey here was much more than a mere holiday; it was a series of unforgettable moments that each family member will cherish.

Reflecting on our experiences, there are numerous highlights that stand out. From the majestic heights of Mount Batur to the tranquil gardens of Ubud, each destination unfolded new layers of beauty and serenity. Every rice terrace, every bustling market, and every colorful ceremony added depth to our understanding of the Balinese way of life. The interactive moments - participating in a local cooking workshop, learning the craft of batik, or sampling exotic local dishes - immersed us thoroughly in the island's rich heritage.

Connecting with the local people left a profound impact on us. The warmth and hospitality we encountered were genuine and deeply moving. Our conversations with the locals, learning about their customs and daily lives, enlightened us about the essence of Balinese culture. Friendships forged with such open-hearted individuals will resonate with us long after our departure.

For families planning a trip to Bali, a few practical tips can enhance the overall experience. Ensure ample time for rest and relaxation between activities, as the island's diverse attractions can be overwhelming. Pre-arranged transportation can simplify movement across different regions. Integrating local cultural experiences into the itinerary will enrich understanding, and engaging with local guides can provide insightful context.

As we say goodbye to Bali, the thought of a return journey lingers. The island’s combination of natural splendor and cultural richness ensures that each visit unveils something new and captivating. While departing with a sense of wistfulness, we remain grateful for the shared memories and look forward to the day we can once again explore the many wonders Bali has to offer.
