Their endorsement and permission were crucial for ensuring safety and compliance with local regulations. After the successful climb, I was awarded a certificate of summiting Little Gongga, which gave me a deep sense of achievement and validation for the months of preparation and hard work.

Setting Off: Chengdu to Kangding

Our journey began in the vibrant city of Chengdu, where the air was thick with excitement and anticipation. The bustling streets, infused with rich culture and culinary delights, served as a lively backdrop as we prepared for our mountaineering expedition. As the sun rose, casting a warm glow on the city, the team assembled – comprising five experienced guides and two eager climbers including myself, our group was united by a shared purpose: to summit the formidable peaks of Little Gongga and Reddomain.

The road from Chengdu to Kangding unfolded like a scenic tapestry, revealing breathtaking landscapes of verdant valleys and towering mountains. As we travelled the winding paths, an array of colours adorned the surroundings – from the lush green forests to the stark, rugged outlines of the mountains ahead. The vistas reminded us of the natural beauty that lay in waiting. This initial leg of the journey not only heightened our excitement but also served as a prelude to the challenges that awaited us.

Kangding, our destination, stands proudly at an elevation of 2,600 meters. Known as the gateway to some of Tibet’s highest peaks, this charming town is steeped in culture and history. The bustling market streets were alive with local vendors selling traditional Tibetan handicrafts and delicious street food. We soaked in the vibrant atmosphere, which highlighted the seamless blend of Tibetan and Han cultures. Moreover, the town’s proximity to various trekking routes made it an ideal basecamp, rich in opportunities for exploration. As our team acclimatised to the altitude, the collective excitement and determination grew, setting the stage for the adventures ahead.

Trekking to Base Camp

The trek from Gexi Grassland to Liangcha River, where our base camp is established at an altitude of 3,800 meters, proved to be a remarkable journey, filled with breathtaking scenery and significant challenges. As we embarked on this expedition, we were greeted by the vast expanse of the grassland, dotted with wildflowers and framed by majestic mountains. The scenery seemed to change with each step, offering stunning views that fuelled our desire to continue despite the physical exertion. The serenity of nature enveloped us, a reminder of the beauty that lay ahead.

However, the trek was not without its obstacles. The uneven terrain presented various challenges, from rocky ascents to narrow, winding paths along steep cliffs. The increasing altitude began to take its toll, highlighting the essence of acclimatisation as we navigated the shifting landscape. As the oxygen level decreased, we were acutely aware of our physical limits, prompting us to adjust our pace and rest when necessary. Each member of our team tackled the difficulty in their own way, demonstrating both resilience and determination.

Ascent to Little Gongga: Camps and Challenges

The journey to the summit of Little Gongga begins at the base camp, nestled at approximately 3,800 meters. From this starting point, we embark on a trek that not only tests our physical limits but also challenges mental fortitude. The ascent to Camp 1 at 4,700 meters involves navigating through rugged terrain characterised by rocky paths and steep inclines. Each of us must acclimatise to the increasing altitude, which often brings difficulties such as breathlessness and fatigue. Despite these challenges, the camaraderie established among us emerges as a vital source of motivation during these initial phases.

As the expedition progresses, we arrives at Camp 1, where they are greeted with a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains. This stop not only serves as a rest point but also as a moment for reflection on the path ahead. The ascent from Camp 1 to Camp 2 start on the next day, located at 5,200 meters, proves to be more demanding. The terrain becomes increasingly unstable, with frequent rockfalls and challenging ice patches. Recognition of each team member's strengths plays a crucial role in navigating these obstacles. The support from fellow climbers fosters a resilient spirit, encouraging individuals to push through physical discomfort while cultivating an atmosphere of teamwork and solidarity.

At approximately 12:30 PM Singapore time, the moment we had all been striving for finally arrived. Standing atop Little Gongga, the profound sense of exhilaration was beyond words. The panoramic views stretched almost endlessly, revealing the wild beauty of the range and the challenges we had surmounted. In that exhilarating moment, a wave of realisation washed over me: I was potentially the first Singaporean to summit this majestic peak. The amalgamation of the physical strain, emotional release, and breathtaking scenery created a memory that would resonate deeply within my soul for years to come.

Descent and Reflections: Preparing for Reddomain

The exhilaration of summiting Little Gongga was soon accompanied by the realisation that the descent would be as demanding as the ascent. Each step back to the base camp required considerable focus and caution, as the trails were steep and treacherous. The journey downward was not simply a reverse of our climb; it involved navigating slippery rocks, loose gravel, and steep declines. It became clear that this part of the expedition demanded resilience and an acute awareness of our surroundings. Emotional highs turned into a sobering acknowledgment of the physical toll that the mission imposed on the body and mind.

Upon reaching base camp, the team took time to recover. This period was crucial not just for physical recuperation but also for mental reflection.
