Reddomain Expedition: Glacier Dreams Awaits You
Reddomain: A Magically Expedition, Discover the breathtaking scenery and glacial wonders of this Epic Adventure.

Introduction: Setting the Scene in Chengdu
After our adventure on JiangGeGaBo (江格嘎波) , I spent three days with Jo, exploring the sights of Chengdu. Jo’s enthusiasm for our expeditions was contagious, and we had a blast discovering the city. She departed for Singapore on April 7th, leaving me with a desire for more adventure. My next challenge? A 3-day trek to Reddomain Glacier, starting on May 8th.
Day 1: The Journey Begins
Our expedition began with a drive from Chengdu to Laoyuling, sitting at an altitude of 2800 meters. The eleven trekkers, including myself, were buzzing with excitement. Leaving the urban landscape behind and venturing into the heart of rural China. The drive from Chengdu to Laoyuling takes several hours, offering a scenic transition from bustling city streets to tranquil countryside. Along the way, trekkers are treated to panoramic views of lush farmlands, rolling hills, and quaint villages, each a snapshot of the region's rich cultural tapestry. Laoyuling itself is a charming village, nestled amid verdant landscapes and offering a serene introduction to the natural beauty that will characterise the trek.

The evening in Laoyuling is both restful and informative. Trekkers gather for a detailed briefing from the guides, who outline the itinerary and discuss the challenges and highlights of the trek to Reddomain Glacier. This session is invaluable, offering practical tips on gear, safety, and the physical demands of the journey. As dusk settles, the group shares a communal meal, fostering camaraderie and anticipation for the adventure that lies ahead. With a clear understanding of the path forward and a night under the stars, trekkers retire to their rooms, ready to embrace the challenges and marvels of the following days.
Day 2: Trekking to Riwuqie Base Camp
A short 40-minute drive took us to Gexi Grassland, our starting point at 3200 meters. The trek to Riwuqie base camp was 18 kilometres, with an ascent to 4350 meters. The panoramic views of the surrounding mountains are truly breathtaking, offering trekkers a visual feast of nature's grandeur.

The Gexi Grassland is not only a visual delight but also a sanctuary for wildlife, with opportunities to spot various species in their natural habitat. The grassland's serene atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for a midday break. Here, we take a moment to rest, have a meal, and absorb the tranquillity of the surroundings.

The journey then continues towards the Liangcha River, a winding waterway that meanders through the landscape, offering both challenge and charm. The river's clear, reflective waters provide ample opportunities for stunning photography, capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the water's surface. Moments of reflection by the river can be deeply restorative, allowing trekkers to recharge mentally and physically.

The final stretch of the day's trek leads to the Riwuqie Base Camp, situated in the imposing shadow of towering peaks. The approach to the base camp is marked by a sense of anticipation, as the day's exertions give way to the satisfaction of reaching this pivotal milestone. The dramatic backdrop of the towering peaks serves as a constant reminder of the adventure's magnitude and the natural beauty that surrounds them.

The base camp at Riwuqie was a large metal hut, accommodating all of us comfortably with sleeping bags provided. The guides prepared a delicious dinner, and we spent the evening playing games organised by the guides.

Laughter filled the hut as we bonded over shared experiences. As night falls, the base camp becomes a hub of camaraderie and rest, as everyone prepares for the final push towards the Redomain Glacier.
Day 3: Ascent to the Glacier Lake
The final day of our trek begins early, as we depart from Riwuqie Base Camp with the exhilarating anticipation of reaching Glacier Lake. The trek to the glacier lake was 3.5 kilometres from base camp, ascending to 4700 meters. The path ahead is both challenging and immensely rewarding, weaving through rugged terrain that offers panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and serene glacier formations. The crisp mountain air and the sight of untouched nature invigorate our spirits as we navigate the ascent.
The guide brought along a drone, capturing stunning videos of our journey. One of the most impressive shots was of our team walking in a single line, resembling a professional ice exploration team in the Antarctic. It was an incredible moment for all of us.

As we approach Glacier Lake, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking tableau of ice and rock, with the shimmering blue waters of the lake reflecting the grandeur of the surrounding mountains.

Here, we have ample time to soak in the majestic scenery, capturing memories through photographs and silent reflection. The stillness of Glacier Lake provides a perfect moment to appreciate the journey thus far, a testament to both nature's splendour and our own perseverance.
After spending a tranquil period at the lake, we begin our descent back to Riwuqie Base Camp. The return journey offers a different perspective of the path we traversed, allowing us to notice details we might have missed during the ascent.

Along the way, the camaraderie built over the past days becomes evident, as we share stories and experiences, forging bonds that extend beyond the trek itself.
Once back at Riwuqie Base Camp, we continue our trek towards the Gexi Grassland.

The expansive grassland, with its rolling hills and diverse flora, provides a gentle transition from the rugged mountain paths. From there, we proceed to Laoyuling, where the final leg of our trek concludes.
Our journey culminates with the return to Chengdu, where participants can finally relax and celebrate their remarkable accomplishment. This concluding day encapsulates the essence of the entire trek: the awe-inspiring natural scenery, the sense of achievement upon reaching the glacier, and the shared experiences that have transformed a group of individuals into a cohesive team of adventurers.
Conclusion: Reflections on the Expedition
This trek was a memorable adventure, filled with breathtaking scenery and wonderful experiences. The diverse landscapes, from forests and streams to alpine meadows and glaciers, made it an expedition to remember. The Riwuqie base camp, though basic, provided a cozy shelter for our group. The drone footage added a unique touch, capturing the essence of our journey.
Reddomain Glacier is a trek that any nature lover would appreciate. The magnificent views and the sense of achievement made it a worthy addition to my adventures. As I look back on this journey, I am reminded of the beauty of nature and the thrill of exploration. This trek to Reddomain Glacier has certainly earned its place in my list of unforgettable experiences.
